Defining Industrial

The term “industrial grade” is frequently used to describe something that’s more reliable or stronger than competing products. The term “industrial computer” is similarly used to describe hardware that is engineered to be more dependable and capable than standard consumer grade systems. When it comes to defining an industrial PC here at OnLogic there’s one very clear difference between a commercial computer and an industrial computer: the fan.

What is an Industrial Computer?

A OnLogic industrial PC has no cooling fans or vents. Heat is a constant concern for computer users, especially in the challenging environments faced by today’s industrial PCs. Advanced passive cooling, which we call Hardshell Technology, allows our industrial PCs to transfer the heat created by internal components into the enclosure, where it can be dissipated into the air. The fan is one of the most common points of failure for traditional systems and by removing it, and sealing the case to prevent dust and debris from damaging internal components, industrial computers are able to survive much longer with lower maintenance needs than their fanned counterparts.

Who Uses Industrial PCs?

Industrial computers are the go-to solution for manufacturers, energy management professionals, security integrators, and industrial digital signage companies (just to name a few) that need a computer that will reliably operate in environments where traditional fanned hardware simply wouldn’t survive, or would require constant maintenance. Think of a cabinet manufacturing facility that’s constantly full of sawdust and glue fumes. As those contaminants find their way into the computers on the line they build up and quickly cause downtime. Fanless industrial computers keep that kind of airborne debris out, increasing reliability and saving the manufacturer both time and money.
