Made Possible OnLogic

Engineering a Next Gen UAV Control System

Desert Rotor Creates Innovative UAV Ground Control Systems

“OnLogic was able to offer a variety of options for an embedded NUC solution. Because OnLogic offers an array of options for each fanless PC, we can offer options to Desert Rotor’s end users. This allows us to create a truly customizable product.”

- Debin Ray, Co-Founder and CEO, Desert Rotor

Based in Scottsdale, AZ, Desert Rotor creates innovative, high quality, highly compatible and cost effective ground control systems (GCS) to manage and pilot unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones. Their controllers are designed for Civil Engineers, movie production companies, aerial inspections, law enforcement, agricultural applications, search & rescue operations and even hobbyists who want to simplify and streamline their drone controls.

Over the years, Desert Rotor has worked with top industry leaders, aerospace engineers and drone pilots to deliver the features and functionality required. Their revolutionary GCS platform integrates key robust technologies into one small form factor. The team at Desert Rotor pride themselves on offering the highest level professional drone ground stations on the market today, and OnLogic industrial computing hardware has proven to be the ideal match for Desert Rotor's quickly growing business.

Embedded NUC Project Needs

To create their UAV controllers, Desert Rotor sought a system that was compact enough for easy installation into the final controller and had the requisite power to handle a wide range of software applications. Also, they needed a rugged solution to survive transport and set up in remote locations. Finally, it needed the ability to survive diverse and sometimes harsh environments.

“Our GCS are highly innovative for unmanned aircrafts," says Debin Ray, Co-Founder and CEO, Desert Rotor. "We're integrating an embedded NUC PC with wireless video receiving technology along with radio transmitter functions. This technology all together allows our clients to manage, operate and pilot UAVs using various integrated components such as switches, dials and joysticks. We've also incorporated additional hardware and software tools into the platform.“

The OnLogic Solution - a Fanless Industrial Embedded NUC

Combining Intel's Next Unit of Computing (NUC) motherboard form factor with OnLogic's proven Hardshell™ Fanless Technology, the ML100 was quite literally the perfect fit for Debin and his team. The system is ultra-compact for easy installation. Despite the compact form factor, it still provides the connectivity and performance that Desert Rotor needs for their control systems.

The ML100 by OnLogic is a perfect fit in size and power for Desert Rotor’s Ground Control System.

“The primary computer challenge we had was finding an embedded NUC that not only had a small footprint but also packed a ton of power. We were also looking for customization options and a partner that could answer all of our questions.

“We feel we found that with OnLogic and the ML100. In demanding drone applications, the need for higher processing power is growing. And, in the past couple of years, we have seen a massive push towards streaming digital HD video and large data wirelessly from drone to the GCS. With OnLogic, we are able to find that power in an embedded NUC. Furthermore, it offered a small and durable form factor that we can utilize with our GCS models.

“It has been an overall really positive experience working with OnLogic. The highlight is the strong client focus OnLogic offers regardless of company size. We enjoy having a dedicated representative to help us with our orders - this shows their tremendous commitment towards customers. The genuine interest OnLogic has with Desert Rotor really shows. Because of this, the Desert Rotor team greatly appreciates all aspects of our relationship.“
