What is a Mil-Spec Computer?
Mil-Spec computers are designed for the most extreme environments and most challenging computing applications. Constructed of ultra-rugged materials both inside and out, Mil-Spec hardware is often subjected to specialized testing to meet various standards and certifications. Mil-Spec PCs, sometimes referred to as Rugged COTS (Custom Off The Shelf) are built to resist airborne debris, extreme temperatures, shock & vibration and in many cases moisture, with Mil-Spec hardware often being IP65 rated for water resistance.
What are Mil-Spec Computers Used For?
While the naming convention would indicate that these super tough computers are intended exclusively for military use, Mil-Spec PCs are currently being employed in a wide range of heavy industrial markets. With more and more systems requiring substantial computing power, Mil-Spec equipment is being deployed to ensure consistent operation and reduce downtime and maintenance needs, especially in remote locations where servicing hardware is difficult to impossible. Offshore oil rigs, oil & gas pipeline monitoring installations, heavy construction equipment and aerospace integrators are all using Mil-Spec computers to monitor and control mission critical equipment.
What is MIL-STD 810G?
Originally established by the US government, MIL-STD 810G outlines testing procedures to ensure that equipment certified as MIL-STD 810G compliant will withstand the environment and conditions in which it will be deployed. For rugged computing hardware, MIL-STD 810G is used to identify systems tested to operate reliably in the face of vibration, mechanical shock, temperature shock and extreme temperatures.
